Rack or cradle boat storage

Horizontal boat storage on cradles

Well known among boating enthusiasts, cradle storage is a tried-and-tested technique used in marinas with available hard-standing space for out-of-water storage.

It’s a suitable dry storage solution for all types of boats: motorboats or sailboats, monohulls or multihulls…

Like other dry storage methods – such as trailer storage – it’s particularly suited for long-term lay-ups: over the winter months, for example. Dry storage helps protect the vessel from the effects of seawater and reduces maintenance costs. The hull is easily accessible, simplifying repairs and antifouling work.

A cradle, by definition, is a structural frame designed to support a boat. When a vessel is stored on cradles on land, these are in direct contact with the hull. Made of metal or wood, they adapt to the shape of the hull, balance the weight, and ensure the boat’s stability.

However, for marina operators, storing boats on cradles limits the number of available storage spots. Boaters, meanwhile, must adjust to the logistical aspects: with horizontal boat storage, certain handling operations may be more complex, depending on the facilities available.

Vertical boat storage on racks

Vertical boat storage using racks or “shelves”, as it’s often described, makes perfect sense. A more recent method, it offers greater storage capacity and streamlines port logistics.

A rack is a multi-level metal structure used to store boats out of the water. In marinas equipped with this racking system, boats are placed at varying heights using a forklift or a specialised crane. There are no boats or obstructions between the racks and the launch area – so launching or hauling a boat is typically fast and straightforward.

The only real drawback of dry stack storage is its limitations in terms of boat weight and size. Generally, rack shelving is suitable only for motorboats with hulls up to around 9 metres in length – depending on the infrastructure.

Sailboats with deep draughts or fixed masts, and multihulls, usually cannot be stored on racks.

They can still be stored on cradles, however!

💡 Did you know?
To provide added protection during long storage periods, some boat owners cover their boats with heat-shrinkable protective cocoon. This fully encloses the vessel and protects it from dust, UV rays, and other harmful elements.

Choosing between rack and cradle storage: key decision criteria

Wondering how to decide between rack and cradle storage? We recommend selecting your marina and storage method based on a few key factors.

Boat specifications and frequency of use

First, your choice will depend on your boat type:

  • If you own a lightweight motorboat such as a RIB, open boat, or day cruiser, rack storage is perfectly suited.
  • Conversely, if you own a heavy boat, a sailboat, or a vessel with unusual dimensions, cradle storage will be more appropriate.

Then, consider how frequently you use your boat:

  • If you plan to head out regularly on the sea or river, you’ll appreciate the fast access typically provided by rack storage.
  • If you’re looking for long-term storage – for overwintering or extended downtime – cradle storage is likely to be the better choice.

Port facilities and available services

Also take into account the services provided by the marina, according to your needs, crew, and boating plans.

Check the availability of:

  • On-site surveillance
  • Launching and landing services
  • Lifting or craning equipment
  • Water and electricity supply
  • Provisioning and equipment supply
  • Boat maintenance and repair facilities

Q&A about dry stack storage

What’s the difference between rack and cradle storage?

Cradles are fixed ground structures that allow boats to be stored side-by-side, horizontally. Rack storage involves placing boats on stacked metal shelves, vertically.

What types of boats can be stored on a rack?

Rack storage is ideal for small to medium-sized motorboats. The maximum length for rack storage typically ranges between 7 and 9 metres, depending on the port. Due to size and weight, sailboats or heavier vessels are generally stored on cradles.

What are the advantages of rack storage?

Out of the water, boats are often better protected than when moored afloat – especially during long-term storage. In addition to improved protection, rack storage is often cost-effective: within the Port Adhoc network, rack storage starts from €83/month.

Is dry stack storage suitable for wintering?

Yes. Storing a boat on a rack offers excellent protection for long-term storage, whether in winter or summer.

What services are typically available at dry stack marinas?

Services often include:

  • Scheduled launching and landing (booking times may vary)
  • Site surveillance
  • Hull cleaning and maintenance areas
  • Water and electricity access
  • Boat maintenance…

Is it necessary to book a dry stack storage spot in advance?

Yes, it is always essential to book a rack storage space – whether for short- or long-term periods, regardless of the time of year or location. Spaces are limited and demand is high!
