The Netherlands has been one of Europe’s most popular sailing destinations for decades, and for good reason.

Few countries combine so many advantages within such a compact area. There are large, safe inland sailing waters, excellent marina infrastructure, and short distances between cities and nature. Sailing conditions are predictable, and the country boasts an exceptionally sailor-friendly culture.

Two sailing areas stand out in particular: the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. They lie directly next to each other. Both offer excellent conditions for cruising sailors, weekend crews, and seasonal berth holders. Yet they differ significantly in character, atmosphere, and sailing experience.

The key question is therefore not only: “Which sailing area suits me best?”

But also: “From which home port can I make the most of both?”

This is where Lelystad comes into play.

Few locations in the Netherlands connect these two sailing areas as intelligently, comfortably, and flexibly as this modern city in Flevoland.

With its three marinas, Jachthaven Lelystad Haven, DEKO Marina Lelystad, and Flevo Marina, the Port Adhoc Group offers several options for finding the environment that best suits your sailing style.

Markermeer

A relaxed and versatile sailing area for flexible trips

For many sailors, the Markermeer is considered the more accessible and relaxed of the two sailing areas. Located south of the IJsselmeer, it was created after the construction of the Houtribdijk, which separates the two bodies of water. This resulted in a large inland sailing area with relatively sheltered conditions.

However, “sheltered” certainly does not mean boring. The Markermeer offers expansive open waters, lively harbor towns, and many short sailing routes. It also benefits from excellent infrastructure and easy access to Amsterdam and the Randstad region.

For sailors who enjoy weekend cruises or spontaneous short trips, this sailing area is particularly attractive.

Predictable conditions and less stressful sailing

One of the Markermeer’s biggest advantages is its predictability. Compared to the IJsselmeer, wave heights are generally lower. This makes sailing more comfortable for families, less experienced crews, and sailors who prioritize comfort over challenge. Relaxed holiday cruises are easy to plan, and wind and weather conditions are often easier to manage than on the more exposed IJsselmeer.

This does not mean the area lacks excitement. In strong winds, the Markermeer can still offer sporty sailing conditions. Overall, however, sailing here tends to feel more controlled and relaxed.

Popular destinations on the Markermeer

The sailing area owes much of its appeal to its charming harbour towns.

Particularly popular destinations include:

  • Hoorn,
  • Enkhuizen,
  • Volendam,
  • Monnickendam,
  • Marken,
  • and of course Amsterdam.

Many of these towns combine historic Dutch charm with modern marina facilities.

This creates exactly the combination many cruising sailors are looking for:👇

  • Sail during the day.
  • Spend the evening strolling through picturesque streets, enjoying local restaurants, or relaxing by the waterfront.
  • This blend is especially appreciated by leisure sailors and weekend crews.

IJsselmeer

The classic Dutch large-scale sailing area

The IJsselmeer, by contrast, has a distinctly different character. It feels larger, more open, and more maritime. Many sailors describe it as the point where inland sailing and true offshore-style sailing begin to merge, and that is precisely what makes it so appealing. As the former inland sea connected to the North Sea, it offers vast stretches of water, long passages, and a much greater sense of open-water sailing than the Markermeer.

More space, more wind, more dynamics

On the IJsselmeer, wind and weather have a noticeably greater influence. Waves build up more quickly. Winds are less obstructed. Weather changes are felt more directly. As a result, it offers a more dynamic and sporty sailing environment that many experienced sailors particularly enjoy.

At the same time, compared to the open North Sea, the IJsselmeer remains highly manageable. There are no significant tidal challenges, infrastructure is well developed, navigation marks are excellent, and numerous safe harbors are available.

This is why the area is often considered the perfect stepping stone between inland and coastal sailing.

Historic harbour towns with a maritime atmosphere

Like the Markermeer, the IJsselmeer is defined by its harbor towns.

Popular destinations include:

  • Stavoren,
  • Hindeloopen,
  • Medemblik,
  • Workum,
  • Lemmer,
  • and Urk.

Many of these towns were once important trading and fishing ports. Their rich history continues to shape their atmosphere today. Historic architecture, maritime culture, and an active sailing community come together to create a unique experience. It is this combination of challenging sailing and historic harbor life that makes the IJsselmeer so special.

Markermeer or IJsselmeer?

The real strength lies in combining both, and that is exactly why Lelystad is so interesting.

👉 Why limit yourself to only one sailing area?

Lelystad’s location allows sailors to enjoy both worlds with complete flexibility, depending on the weather, the crew, or simply their mood.

One weekend can be spent enjoying relaxed cruising on the Markermeer. The next can involve longer passages on the IJsselmeer. This flexibility is a major advantage for seasonal berth holders, helping them avoid the routine that many sailors eventually seek to escape.

The Houtribdijk is a 26-kilometer-long dam located in the heart of the IJsselmeer region between Lelystad and Enkhuizen.

Why Lelystad is the perfect base

Lelystad enjoys an exceptionally strategic location. Situated directly between the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer, it provides fast access to both sailing areas.

This is particularly attractive for German boat owners who often rely on long weekends, short trips, or limited vacation periods. After all, nobody wants to lose half a sailing day before the actual trip even begins.

Excellent accessibility from Germany

Another major advantage of Lelystad is its easy accessibility. Many German sailors can reach the region conveniently via well-developed motorway networks. Especially from North Rhine-Westphalia and northern Germany, travel times are often surprisingly manageable.

As a result, Lelystad is an excellent choice as a seasonal marina, weekend base, secondary berth location, or long-term home port.

Three distinct marinas in Lelystad for different sailing styles and needs

One of the key advantages is that the Port Adhoc Group offers several marina concepts in Lelystad. This allows sailors to choose the location that best matches their sailing habits and preferences.
