However, “sheltered” certainly does not mean boring. The Markermeer offers expansive open waters, lively harbor towns, and many short sailing routes. It also benefits from excellent infrastructure and easy access to Amsterdam and the Randstad region.

Predictable conditions and less stressful sailing

One of the Markermeer’s biggest advantages is its predictability. Compared to the IJsselmeer, wave heights are generally lower. This makes sailing more comfortable for families, less experienced crews, and sailors who prioritize comfort over challenge. Relaxed holiday cruises are easy to plan, and wind and weather conditions are often easier to manage than on the more exposed IJsselmeer.

This does not mean the area lacks excitement. In strong winds, the Markermeer can still offer sporty sailing conditions. Overall, however, sailing here tends to feel more controlled and relaxed.

At the same time, compared to the open North Sea, the IJsselmeer remains highly manageable. There are no significant tidal challenges, infrastructure is well developed, navigation marks are excellent, and numerous safe harbors are available.
