Finding a berth in the Mediterranean: a dream project

Mediterranean ports, open to an exceptional destination

The Mediterranean Sea has always been a sailor's dream. For as long as anyone can remember, it has been the scene ofincredible maritime adventures, in a variety of destinations, all of them of particular interest. When it comes to sailing, the Mediterranean Sea has a good reputation: despite its changeable and sometimes difficult nature, it offers a vast and magnificent sailing territory, which yachtsmen are always delighted to explore. Whether sailing or motoring, Mediterranean boat owners can enjoy a variety of unique destinations all year round.

Some choose the Mediterranean as their first sailing area, while others prefer to start with the English Channel or the Atlantic Ocean. But most yachtsmen think about it, and one day or another, plan to sail on the Grande Bleue. But what about you? Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned yachtsman, on a motorboat or a sailboat, you should consider finding a Mediterranean port location to make the most of your unit...

Mediterranean boat shows: the ideal place to find a future unit

Les Nauticales, Les Nautiques de Port Camargue, the Salon International du Multicoque, La Napoule Boat Show, the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Salon Nautik de Bandol, Les Occasions du Multicoque, the Salon nautique d'Automne... There's a good reason why so many renowned boat shows have chosen to locate in the Mediterranean: with a location like this, they offer current and future yachtsmen the promise of memorable cruising in a magnificent playground.

With a large number of boats on display, some of them available for trial, these events are ideal for choosing and acquiring a new or pre-owned unit. Whether it's your first boat or, on the contrary, your second, third or perhaps fourth unit, you should find what you're looking for in one of the Mediterranean ports. What's next? How do I get a marina berth in the Mediterranean?

Several solutions for mooring your boat in the Mediterranean, depending on your project

Marina or marina, serviced or unserviced, afloat or dry... There's no shortage of Mediterranean harbors to choose from. On the other hand, access to harbor infrastructures is not as easy, whether you're looking for a berth in the Mediterranean for a few days, several weeks, several months or for the whole year. Waiting lists for a contract for an annual berth in a marina can be long, and depending on your project, you may be asked to wait up to several decades.

Steps to obtaining a port location in the Mediterranean

The difficulty of obtaining a Mediterranean harbor space depends, first of all, on your criteria and the area concerned. Start by determining your needs: how much dry or afloat harbor space would you like to be able to rent? Also, on what elements would you be willing to make concessions to gain easier or quicker access to a site?

If you don't already have a unit, it's never too early to start looking: it's been said that the ideal time to start worrying about finding a Mediterranean port location would be before or during the purchase phase. In other words, now is the time!

Studying mooring possibilities

Find out which Mediterranean ports are located in the area where you plan to sail. Do they welcome boats of your size, and under what conditions? In addition to the Mediterranean port, are there any other services you might find useful? How easy is it to get to these ports, for example from your home? If you are interested in one or more ports, are Rates the ones you have in mind?

How to apply for a berth

Once you've found one or more places to moor your boat in the Mediterranean, you'll need to put together one or more dossiers. You'll need to submit a file to each port that really appeals to you and corresponds to your project. If you don't yet know exactly what the characteristics of your future unit will be, aim for the slightly higher category: it will always be possible to upgrade a pre-existing file, should the details of your vessel change!

Waiting for a berth in the Mediterranean

This will depend on the capacity of the chosen mooring and the characteristics of the unit concerned. And don't forget: the size of your motorboat or sailboat can have a major influence on the waiting time. The wider your vessel, for example, the more space it will take up in the harbor, and the more difficult it may be for the manager to place it. The same applies to particularly long ships, but also to those in the "classic" categories, which are in great demand. So, if your vessel is a few feet longer or shorter than most other boats, this can work in your favor and reduce the waiting time for a berth in the Mediterranean.

Last but not least, registration on a waiting list may or may not be free of charge. Also, to gain access to certain berths in Mediterranean ports, some yachtsmen have to pay an annual fee to an association or boat club, for several years, before finally succeeding in obtaining a berth.

For us, there's no secret to anticipation. Anticipating your future harbor location from the moment you purchase your unit is the key to finding a boat mooring solution in the Mediterranean suited to your project.
